Hamilton establishes a goal for himself when he retires from Formula One

Lewis Hamilton’s push for diversity has already had an impact on Formula One, and he believes it will continue after he retires.

Lewis Hamilton is hoping that his push for equality will leave an indelible impression on Formula One when he retires, despite the fact that he has already witnessed changes in the sport and at Mercedes.

In the paddock, the Briton has led the fight for equality and diversity while also promoting his anti-racism message. As part of this mission, Hamilton and Mercedes announced the launch of ‘Ignite,’ a joint initiative aimed at increasing diversity and inclusion in racing, based on The Hamilton Commission’s findings and recommendations.

Hamilton, who also founded the charitable foundation Mission 44 to empower young and underrepresented groups in the UK, hopes that his efforts will have a lasting impact on F1 and the rest of the world once he retires.

“What will make me proud is when I leave this paddock, to really see this journey of taking action, seeing more women here, seeing more people of colour here, seeing it more reflective of the outside world and see it continue to progress,” Hamilton said.

“That’s what will make me proud. I’ve already seen that within my team and I’m already seeing that here.

“One thing that I experienced, when we started coming out of lockdown, we started going back to the factory, I walked in and I saw the marketing department. A bigger team than I’d ever seen before, a more diverse than I’d ever seen.

“I was really, really shocked and it was really emotional for me, because most often you’re the only person of colour in the room and you always wonder why.”

After extending his Mercedes contract in July, Hamilton, who turns 37 in January, will be on the F1 grid for at least the next two seasons.
