FRM’s chance on Zane Smith is already yielding considerable benefits

With a long-term contract, Front Row Motorsports “took a gamble” on Zane Smith, and the decision has already paid off with a NASCAR victory.

Zane Smith did not have a contract in place at the end of the 2022 season, after coming in second place in the Truck Series title race in both 2020 and 2021.

Smith was eventually signed by Front Row owner Bob Jenkins to race for its Truck Series squad, which it only launched in 2020, however with the expectation he may be a top racer for the organization.

That choice undoubtedly yielded results quickly.

The 2022 series title was won by Smith on Friday night at Phoenix Raceway in the Truck Series final season. First NASCAR championship for Front Row and 23-year-old Smith.

“Definitely a lot has changed,” Smith said. “I have literally stood in this parking lot three years in a row not knowing what I’m going to be doing next year.

“I knew going into this, because I’ve been through way worse times, and regardless of outcome (Friday night), I’m going to have a job next year, and that’s such a weight off your shoulders.

“With (Jenkins) giving me that confidence, I wanted to reward him with a championship, and I felt like that’s why – I don’t want to say I raced so much harder, but I just couldn’t lose another one. It just wasn’t an option.”
