Despite the fact that he hasn’t won a Grand Prix since 2013, Fernando Alonso is still widely regarded as one of the world’s best drivers, and the Spaniard has dismissed the idea of becoming World Champion in a Mercedes, preferring instead to concentrate on the skills of his Alpine team.
Fernando Alonso has dismissed claims that he would have won the World Championship in a Mercedes, instead claiming that his Alpine team is ready of competing for the top spot in Formula One.
Mercedes had taken every eligible championship since 2014 before Max Verstappen won the 2021 F1 Drivers’ Championship.
Alonso, on the other hand, last won at the 2013 Spanish Grand Prix, and the Spaniard retired from F1 in 2018 after a four-year nightmare in a series of stagnant McLarens.
Alonso back to F1 in 2021 for Alpine after 2 years in the World Endurance Championship with Toyota, but the A521 was not consistently successful, and he ended 10th in the Drivers’ rankings.
Although Alonso’s teammate Esteban Ocon won the Hungarian Grand Prix last year, it was in a race marked by high attrition and variable weather conditions.
In more traditional races, the French team was frequently the sixth-fastest.
In a Mercedes, would Alonso be World Champion?
At the age of 39, Alonso is still widely regarded as one of the best drivers in the world, prompting some analysts, including as Martin Brundle, to speculate that if he had been driving a Mercedes in recent years, he could have contributed to his two World Championship championships in 2005 and 2006.
Alonso, on the other hand, dismissed such a notion, arguing that Alpine should be able to be competitive at the front whenever Formula One enters a new era of technological restrictions in 2022.
“With a new set of regulations that started this year, Alpine should be capable of fighting for the championship, and that’s why we are here and why we work so hard,” Alonso told media including RacingNews365.com.
“There is the budget cap in place, there are other things that F1 went into [with the new regulations].
“I think there is a possibility for everyone, and that is why Alpine and Groupe Renault, in general, are here.”
