Bubba Wallace’s crew chief and two others are suspended by NASCAR

Bubba Wallace will be without his crew chief and two other members of his team for another four races in the NASCAR Cup Series.

Following Wallace’s car losing a tire during Sunday’s race at Circuit of the Americas, NASCAR penalised Bootie Barker, the crew chief for Wallace’s No. 23 23XI Racing Toyota, for 4 races.

Team mates Caleb Dirks and Adam Riley were also disqualified for the next four races.

Section 10.5.2.6 of the NASCAR Rule Book penalises crews for losing or separating an inappropriately mounted tire/wheel from the car.

On Lap 45 of Sunday’s 69-lap race, NASCAR was required to issue a yellow due to track debris, which turned out to be Wallace’s No. 23 Toyota’s left-rear wheel and single-center locking lug nut.

This is the fifth time this season that a Cup team has had suspension issues with the Next Gen vehicle due to loose wheels.

Corey LaJoie, Kaz Grala, Justin Haley, and Todd Gilliland’s crews have all experienced loose wheels during races this season, resulting in crew chief, tyre changer, and tyre carrier sanctions for four races.

In reaction to the sanctions, the squad stated the following: “Following NASCAR’s recent penalty for an incident at Circuit of the Americas, Dave Rogers, 23XI Performance Director, will serve as acting crew chief for the No. 23 team.” The team will not file an appeal.”
